What's holding back protection of the Antarctic Ocean?
On April 30, 2020, ASOC hosted a web event titled "What's holding back protection of the Antarctic Ocean?"
Panelists were: Paul Nicklen, Poles Apart! Founder of Sealegacy and contributor to National Geographic, Jennifer Jacquet, Associate Professor at New York University, and Dr. Sara Labrousse, an Antarctic marine ecologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. The panel was moderated by Farah Obaidullah, Ocean Advocate and Founder of Women4Oceans.
Description: The member countries of the Commission on the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) committed to designating a representative system of MPAs in 2009. However, thus far only 2 MPAs have been designated, despite several strong, science-based proposals for additional areas. This panel will explore the obstacles to achieving promised protection of the Antarctic Ocean, and discuss what's at stake for Antarctica's unique marine ecosystems in an era of climate change and biodiversity loss, as well as what the science is telling us about the changes already underway. Antarctica has long been an example of what is possible when countries set aside short-term interests and work towards a common benefit. Creating a representative system of MPAs in the region could likewise set a precedent for addressing other pressing global environmental issues. What is needed to make Antarctic protection a reality?
