As the NBA teams, NBA players and NBA orthopedic surgeons and specialists leave the bubble, Dr. Nwachukwu discusses what people will remember 5-10 years from now about this experience.

He believes there will be multiples reasons and here is why. First, the NBA was able to be the first sport to successfully design, construct and pull off the bubble. This will be a lasting legacy for their sport. Who knows if being exposed to the deadly viruses is something that is in our foreseeable future whereas the bubble concept may be here to stay. The NBA, WNBA and NBPA (National Basketball Players Association) will be seen as the pioneer of the bubble.

Secondly, the other piece that cannot be overlooked is social justice. Both the NBA and the WNBA have been the leading the way on pushing for social justice issues in our society through their sport. Dr. Nwachukwu was actually courtside for the Orlando Magic versus Milwaukee Bucks game where the Milwaukee Bucks refused to play the game.

“There are a lot of issues and societal ills and these players are not immune to them,” said Dr. Nwachukwu. “They have family members, and they are themselves subject to some of the things that are being protested. I am hopeful that there are going to be tangible changes that come about from the player actions. In 5 years, we can look back and say, wow, the NBA players, owners, NBPA, and the NBA came together to enact these tangible changes in our society,”

Dr. Nwachukwu is an orthopedic surgeon and specialist in hip, knee and shoulder surgery at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City. He is the Co-Director of Clinical Research for the Sports Medicine Institute at HSS and an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College. Dr. Nwachukwu completed his undergraduate work at Columbia University and obtained both his MD and MBA from Harvard. His orthopedic surgery residency was completed at HSS followed by sports medicine fellowship training at the world-renowned Rush University.

Dr. Nwachukwu’s specialties include: hip arthroscopy, hip labral repair and reconstruction, anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and repair, articular cartilage repair and transplantation, meniscus repair and transplantation, arthroscopic shoulder stabilization/labrum repair and arthroscopic rotator cuff repair. He has researched joint preservation techniques and incorporates stem cells and biologics in the management of musculoskeletal disorders.
