Forced Sterilization in Russia’s Psychiatric Institutions

While the Russian state promotes family values and campaigns about its birth rate, in homes for mentally disabled, women are forcibly sterilized. Much of what happens inside these institutions never gets out.

Sterilization is the price that women with registered mental disabilities have to pay to avoid being locked up in more restrictive institutions. Medical staff at these state-run institutions use pseudo-science as an excuse.

Coda organized an online event where we heard directly from victims of the practice in Yekaterinburg. Here are their stories.
