The United Nation says child marriage rates have surged in Sierra Leone - because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The UN defines child marriage as a marriage of a girl or boy before the age of 18 and it says the number of girls getting married in Sierra Leone before that age dropped from 56 percent in 2006 to 39 percent 10 years later.

But when schools closed in March, child marriage rates surged.

It estimates that hardships resulting from COVID-19 will drive 13 million more girls to marry before the age of 18.
