Behavioral Health & Wellness Program - www.bhwellness.org

Adversity experienced prenatally and during early childhood has been shown to increase the likelihood that individuals will develop addictions in adolescence and adulthood (including nicotine addiction). Recent research has begun to reveal the physiological and psychological mechanisms behind these associations, as well as factors that may influence whether individuals are more or less vulnerable to developing addictions in the face of adversity. Drs. Young and Garver-Apgar will introduce this body of research and discuss implications for tobacco treatment.

We will:
• Review associations between prenatal stress, ACEs, and the development of addictions, focusing particularly on nicotine addiction
• Examine mechanisms behind these associations, as well as factors that influence vulnerability
• Discuss implications for tobacco treatment

This webinar is part of a series offered by the University of Colorado, Behavioral Health & Wellness Program on successful tobacco treatment strategies for at risk populations including those with mental illnesses and addictions.

Supported by the Vermont Tobacco Control Program.
