Urban Transformations – Sustainable development of cities in times of climate and land use change

In the 21st Century, cities have become the most important habitat of humanity. This causes a rising pressure on e.g. available land, drinking water, biodiversity and the provision of fresh air supply. Worldwide, the challenges for land use, resource consumption and the protection of human health in urban areas are increasing. Furthermore, demographic and climate change requires respective adaptive measures and policies. In order to overcome these challenges, fundamental changes – Urban Transformations – with regard to societal action, urban development and sustainable use of resources are required.
Our focus within the Integrated Project “Urban Transformations” is research on resource efficiency, quality of live and resilience as well as their interrelations. Applying methods from the social and natural sciences as well as approaches of modeling and visualization, we provide the scientific basis and knowledge for strategic plans and solutions for society.
We analyze housing and living conditions in different urban areas with a particular focus on green space provision and traffic-related pollution. Another field of research investigates the outcomes of extreme weather events, such as heat stress and floods. We develop recommendations for municipal institutions and urban society in order to better implement sustainable initiatives and address, prepare for and adapt to the adverse effects of urbanization.
In close cooperation with political, administrative, economic and civil society stakeholders as well as international partners, we identify key issues of urban conviviality and the complex processes of urban development. As a result, our research has an impact on society by a contributing to sustainable urban development.
