Responding to Public Safety Issues at Sheldon M Chumir Health Centre’s SCS Facility

The site at the Sheldon M. Chumir Health Centre in Calgary’s Beltline neighbourhood has reversed a large number of overdoses since opening in 2017, but has unfortunately seen a rise in crime and social disorder in the area.

On February 4, 2019, Council approved a joint Notice of Motion created by Cllr Woolley and I, that suggested a 12-point plan for possible changes, including increased security at city-owned facilities within a 400-metre radius of the Sheldon M. Chumir site and more on-site psychologists and psychiatrists who specialize in addictions and mental health. I had also distributed naloxone kits to my council colleagues and Administration in Chambers, and briefly walked through how to use them to reverse an overdose. These kits are free for anyone at any local pharmacy, and a demonstration on how to administer the drug is also available upon request.
