#ENVIRONMENTALISSUES / Protection the ocean
Less than 1 percent of South Africa’s marine waters are safeguarded as marine protected areas. However, a 2014 presidential initiative commits South Africa to conserving 5 percent of its marine waters by 2017. To reach this goal, 21 potential new marine protected areas have been proposed. Kerry Sink will work to ensure that their design achieves the intended goals of biodiversity protection
Sink is one of five distinguished scientists and conservationists from Costa Rica, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and the United States to be awarded a 2016 Pew fellowship in marine conservation.
