New findings in ALS could lead to treatments that slow down disease. Jeff Rothstein's lab has shown that ALS disrupts transport in and out of the nucleus through nuclear pores. In his latest work, they show that when a neuron is stressed that it forms stress granules in the cell. These stress granules tend to collect the nuclear pore proteins, which then further disrupts transport in the cell. The researchers believe that using drugs to prevent stress granules from forming could save neurons from dying and slow down the disease in people with ALS.
