When we are single, all we have to worry about is ourselves. But when you become a couple, especially in marriage you are joining your financial situation together which isn't always an easy task to do.

Everyone manages money differently. And when it comes to relationships, it's uncommon that two people manage their money the exact same way.

If you know any couples that do that, most likely it did not start off that way. Knowing how to communicate about money is the key to success.

Here are some effective tools you can use to minimize money issues in relationships:

1. Find a good time to talk about it

It's important that both you and your significant other are in a good emotional space to discuss money.

Often times when we are stressed, we are less likely to be open to negotiation, feedback, and effective communication.

You both need to be open-minded and calm when discussing this topic as it can be a stressful discussion to have.

2. Factor in your partner's suggestions

Although you might have your own system of how to manage your finances, it's important to be open to your partner's suggestions and ideas as well.

Committed relationships are about negotiation and it's important to factor in your partner's ways of managing things as well.

3. Set financial rules

Set mutually agreed upon rules that both of you can comply with.

Setting budgets for extra spending money per week is a great idea to avoid frivolous spending, and keeping both of you in-line towards whatever financial goals you have.

Figure out what is necessary to spend money on versus unnecessary items.

4. Be honest with yourself about other stressors

This one is very important. It's sometimes easier to blame finances as a reason for relationship distress, but many times there are other factors involved.

So it's important to be honest with yourself and your significant other to make sure that the problem solely is money, and not anything else.

If something else is bothering you about the relationship, talk about it openly. If you keep it hidden, it will only make things worse.

It's not easy to talk about money issues in relationships, but it's important to do so.

Remember that you two are a team, and need to work together to figure out a system that you both are happy with.
