Forty-four years ago today, two Alabama sisters, 12 and 14, sued a federally funded clinic after they were sterilized without consent. It was found that the girls were targeted because they were poor, black and living in public housing.

In this edition of Moments in Civil Rights History, a collaboration of Comcast and the Equal Justice Initiative, the case draws national attention to the widespread nature of involuntary sterilization, revealing that more than 100,000 poor Americans were sterilized each year under federal programs.
