Neoadjuvant therapy, the use of chemotherapy before surgery, shrinks the tumor before surgery, which has been proved to improve surgery outcomes. Accelerated radiation approaches are now common. For example, with an approach called hypofractionated radiation therapy, you receive slightly larger doses in fewer sessions. This shortens the entire regimen by two weeks, enabling the treatment to be completed in three to four weeks. In addition to more traditional radiation therapy, Mayo Clinic's proton beam therapy program offers highly targeted radiotherapy with lower doses of radiation to healthy tissue. Brachytherapy is another specialized radiation therapy that involves placing radioactive seeds through a device to give off radiation internally.
