In South Africa, poaching still decimates endangered species despite the efforts of the authorities
In South Africa, 3% of the rhino population has been decimated due to poaching since last year. Poachers kill the rhinoceros and take their eyes and tale for witchcraft and their horn for the Asian market (and especially China). However, the authorities, alongside the reserve owners and managers, develop techniques to prevent poachers from acting: by hiring guards and 'poisoning the horns'. This technique means put the rhino to sleep, and inject a human-lethal poison which reduces the market value of the horn to nothing. And leaves the rhino unharmed, with a red horn and a bit groggy.
