National healthcare reform has placed patient-centered comparative effectiveness research in the spotlight. Most of the conversation has focused on clinical interventions and shared decisions about treatment. Yet, comparative effectiveness research is equally applicable to evaluation of public health programs. On May 15, 2014 a group of Harvard School of Public Health faculty put forth the case for beginning a national discussion on the relative value not only of medical care, but also of public health interventions. The symposium covered several examples of leading comparative effectiveness research of prevention interventions.
