How Education Can End Child Marriage | World Vision Australia

One in three girls worldwide marries before the age of 18 - and the consequences of early marriage can be deadly.

That’s 700 million women in the world today who were married as girls. A third of them were married before their 15th birthday. And the stats don’t exactly paint a positive picture of the future: each year, another 12 million girls under the age of 18 become child brides.

At its core, child marriage is a fundamental violation of human rights. There are many factors that contribute to a child marrying early, such as financial or food insecurity, or cultural or social norms. Whatever the cause, early marriage compromises a child’s development and severely limits her opportunities in life.

When girls receive an education, the future is brighter for them and their future children. For example, girls who are educated for seven years get married on average four years later. Or children born to educated mother are 50% more likely to survive past age 5.
