Protecting Human Rights During the Covid-19 Crisis and Beyond: Digital Pandemic Surveillance and the Right to Privacy.

High-level side event organized by OHCHR, UN Global Pulse, and AccessNow. Co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Finland to the UN, the Permanent Mission of France to the UN, the Delegation of the European Union to the UN, and the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea to the UN.  

Discussions will delve into the implications of increased surveillance on human rights, during and beyond the COVID-19 pandemic, narrowing in on contact tracing, the use of biometric and health-related data, and other technological interventions.

Drawing upon existing multi stakeholder initiatives, including the UN Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation Roadmap, the event will explore pressing questions from varying perspectives to brainstorm efforts to work towards the protection of personal data and promotion of digital rights in the fight against the pandemic. 

It gathers expert speakers who are Co-Champions and Key Constituents of the High-level Panel on Digital Cooperation Roundtables for Recommendations 3A and 3B “Digital Human Rights” and 3C “Artificial Intelligence”, as well as representatives of Member States, the private sector, and civil society.
