The 25-year-old and his friends organise first-aid training to give themselves the capability to treat gunshot wounds, in case someone they know is shot at random.

He speaks to a teenager he knows who carries a gun to school, so he can feel safe walking to class.

These are the absurd realities for young people in parts of Chicago, where hundreds of millennials have been murdered this year.

"This is not life, this is not normal," Mr Pittman told 7.30.

"We're literally living in a warzone.

"We have so many young people that normalise that trauma; they hear gunshots, and they keep walking.

"We have young people who are literally undiagnosed PTSD victims walking around our streets."
