By 2050, 68% of people in the world will live in cities. Rapid urbanization brings opportunities, but also puts people and nature under pressure.
Already, cities consume 2/3 of global energy, and account for over 70% of carbon emissions. Urban sprawl contributes to the extinction risk of 1 million animal and plant species. Climate change impacts can push 100 million people into poverty by 2030.
What will it take to build a resilient, sustainable urban future for all?
Climate-smart, nature-based integrated solutions can help cities set low emission targets to become carbon neutral; protect cities’ green spaces, lakes, and rivers to conserve biodiversity and enhance livability; factor climate and biodiversity into urban planning; bring nature close to people; and champion social inclusion to leave no one behind.
