Business models for a just and sustainable economy

The UK government's response to COVID-19 has so far been to prop up extractive and unsustainable business models that have been shown to consistently prioritise profits over the interests of suppliers, workers, the local community and the environment. These profits have been funnelled to shareholders, increasing inequality and failing to tackle the climate crisis or increase business resilience.

Many alternatives exist as highlighted by the cooperative movement, Social Enterprise Network and World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) enterprises.

This session will explore business models for a just and sustainable post-COVID economy, drawing on findings from two reports: 1) 'Creating the New Economy', a joint report by Traidcraft Exchange and WFTO looking at the business models within the WFTO membership and 2) a forthcoming report calling for the UK government to prioritise supporting fairer forms of business in post-COVID reconstruction.
