Beauty and the Beast (Racial Discrimination)

This animated Disney musical is cast as a fairy tale, but its romantic plot is built on themes of racial prejudice and discrimination. Moreover, elements of the film parallel superstitions in some societies where certain racial characteristics are deemed to have magical significance -- leading to deeply engrained traditions of prejudice and violence against those who exhibit such traits. For example, the treatment of albinos in some African societies is steeped in such prejudices and superstitions.
