As a result of human impact on the environment, there are species going extinct at a rate of 1,000 times quicker than ever before. Extinction is a natural process, and we know this since we have access to records of fossils spanning more than 500 million years. However, in the last 400 years, the number of animals and plants becoming extinct has reached an urgent crisis. When the red flag is raised, it’s a wake up call for humans and signifies that we need to start paying attention and act accordingly to prevent endangered species. Here are 10 endangered animals soon to be extinct.

Number 10. Asian Elephant

Let’s kick it off with the largest mammal in Asia. Yes, that’s the Asian Elephant. Slightly smaller in size than its African cousins, the Asian elephant stands at 8-10 feet and can weigh up to 2-5 tons. Unfortunately, their colossal size and weight haven’t been able to keep them safe over the years from enemies, those enemies being us, humans. Asian Elephants have sadly, suffered a drastic population decline in the last century. It’s no secret that over the last few decades, elephants have become an increasingly attractive target for poachers. Armed with a plethora of heavy weapons, poachers head out to hunt these innocent elephants, who are unable to defend themselves against the impending poaching problem that currently exists. Poaching for elephant tusks is big business around the world. Sadly, the majority of these beautiful creatures are brutally killed so that poachers can get hold of their ivory tusks and sell them on the black market. A single shipment can be worth up to $1.3m and cost the lives of some 40,000 elephants each year. How infuriating! Ivory belongs to elephants, not to humans.

Number 9. Blue Whale

Now moving on to the largest animal on planet earth, the blue whale. Take a moment to cast your eyes back to where we mentioned the average size of an Asian elephant. Well, believe it or not, the tongue of a Blue Whale can actually weigh just as much as a that. In fact, let’s take this further, imagine two school buses lined-up back to back - yes, that’s how long a blue whale can be in length. The size of these sea giants are unimaginable. So how and why did they make our list of endangered animals? Blue Whales were well on their way towards extinction before they were declared protected by the International Whaling Commission back in 1966, in which most countries agreed to follow, except Japan, Korea, Iceland, and Norway. Before the whaling era, blue whales were truly abundant across all major oceans of the world, their population was found to be in the whopping numbers of 150,000 to 200,000. However, those numbers have drastically decreased leaving behind a mere 1,500-2,000 in existence. Although, whaling is no longer their biggest threat, they have been kept on the endangered list for various factors such as climate change, fishing, pollution and potentially even levels of anthropogenic noise caused from shipping, oil and gas exploration, naval solar training, construction, and other activities that have begun to drown out the ocean’s natural sound. Although they are still endangered, blue whales are expected to make a full recovery even if it will take a number of years until it reaches then.

Number 8. Sea Turtles

Threatened at the hand of humans, sadly six species of sea turtles are currently listed as endangered animals. It’s crazy to think so when they have been swimming in the world’s warm water for more than 220 million years; that is around the same time as dinosaurs. The main reason why the number of sea turtles is declining is because of people and the choices we make. Humans have caused the destruction of their habitat and have polluted their once clean waters with chemicals, which leads to the spread of diseases in the sea and that’s not to mention plastic pollution. Aside from pollution as we know it, recent studies show that light pollution has a huge impact on a sea turtle’s navigation and survival as a newborn. Disorientation from a variety of artificial lighting sources causes thousands of hatchling deaths.....
