World Hunger Day is an initiative by the Hunger Project. It was set up to raise awareness on the very important global issue of hunger and encourage people to be a part of the problem-solving process. Statistics point out that nearly 795 million people worldwide are chronically hungry. The Hunger Project calls upon the global community to partner them in leading efforts towards minimizing hunger by adopting strategies that are sustainable and empowering women to take the lead in this movement. The 2017 theme for World Hunger Day focusses on The Hidden Causes of Hunger.

World Hunger Day is celebrated on May 28 every year around the world and was established by the Hunger Project in 2011.

Given the fact that poverty is just one of the reasons that make people go hungry, the World Hunger Day tries to establish the root causes of hunger besides poverty. While war and natural calamities could also lead to hunger, these do not lead to chronic poverty or hunger unless these events are long-lasting or frequent. Social inequality and its lasting impacts have been pointed out as one of the other main causes of poverty and hunger. Climate change, lack of literacy among women, etc. are among the many other factors that have continued to exacerbate the issue. The Hunger Project aims to tackle these challenges through strategies that empower people to come up with initiatives that would include the affected communities in the solution finding process.

World Hunger Day is observed globally, but it has garnered big momentum in the USA, UK, Sweden and Australia.
