• produce a winner and a loser
• are Intended to evoke pain or hurt
• lack rules of engagement ( in other words anything goes)
• lack cognition or thought and instead solely rely on emotions ( How we feel, not what we think)
• tend to be ignited by a triggering statement, action, or an unresolved issue that resurfaced

The Three T’s used to prevent fights
TONE
The tone of the conversation is impacted by the attitudes each partner brings into the dialogue and it also influences the volume used to transmit verbal messages. Healthy verbal interactions start when partners communicate in a tone that displays a desire to engage. Partners who are calm and use respectful tones make it easier to start the discussion in a non combative fashion. A good tone invites your partner into the conversation and makes them desire the engagement instead of shy away from wanting to talk.
TIMING
Good tone also has to be coupled with good timing, which looks like waiting for an appropriate time to engage in dialogues with your partner. When you approach your partner at the right time they are prepared to talk and you create a higher probability the conversation will conclude with you both feeling heard.
TOPIC
The conversation topic pertains to the subject that is being discussed. The intimate partner who initiates the conversation needs to be mindful to present the topic in the right tone and at the right time. For example if you need to discuss a topic that may evoke some negative emotions in your partner it would be best to use a soft tone during a time they are calm.
