How does disaster relief differ between poor and rich countries? | Inside Story

In the wake of a disaster certain needs are obvious: food, medicine, clean water and the restoration of power. But getting those things into a stricken part of a poor or remote country is a very different matter from providing the same aid to a disaster-stricken area of a rich one. The last few weeks have demonstrated this truth in dramatic fashion. The needs in tsunami hit Indonesia and in hurricane-stricken North Carolina are similar in many ways, but the challenge of meeting them is dramatically different.

So, why is the response often very different in poor and rich countries?
