When Emma’s cancer spread to her lungs and was growing out of control, genetic testing of her cancer found an error in the NTRK gene that was driving her disease. After she was enrolled in a clinical trial for a molecularly targeted therapy, Emma’s tumors shrank dramatically, allowing the 14-year-old to return to school and graduate from 8th grade.
