A majority of African American children are brought up by a single parent, usually a teenage mother. Two-thirds grow up in low-income families with less than the minimum amount of income needed for the necessities of life.

In Episode 6, RTD meets Jimmy, a high school dropout who fathered a child as a teenager, and Miracle, a nurse for elderly patients who became a single mother following her divorce. Both want to protect their children, but can they give their children the stability they need while on their current paths?

RTD hears from those raised without proper parenting about family instability, job prospects destroyed by criminal convictions, and the vital but flawed welfare system that keeps many Black families alive, but poor.
