How to Convince Your Parents to Get a Dog

Trying to convince your mom and dad to get you a dog? Read on to learn ways to help persuade them that include demonstrating responsibility, taking initiative and making genuine promises.

1. Bring Home a Friend's Pet Dog for a Couple of Days

Your parents' rejection of the thought of you owning a dog could stem from the fact that neither of them have ever had a dog as a pet themselves. They may hold many false assumptions, and there could be a lot of misunderstanding about their whole concept of having a four-legged friend in the house.

Practical advice from books and the internet will not solve this problem. The only way to deal with your parents' lack of understanding is to bring in a friend's pet dog to your home for a couple of days. Ideally, this would take place over the weekend so that everyone can experience the full effect of owning a dog. Do this exercise for a couple of weekends to help your parents realize that owning a dog doesn't have to be a huge hassle.

2. Ask for a Puppy as a Birthday Gift

When your parents ask you what you want for your birthday, tell them that you don't want anything but a puppy.

Don't be afraid to plead your case on one or two different occasions. I would even suggest trying to coax your parents with a few mushy lines from poems or song lyrics.

Your parents will never let you own a dog as a pet if you are irresponsible with your stuff. You can demonstrate your maturity by taking good care of everything that you own including your clothes, toys, books, shoes and gadgets.

It is also important that you don't play in the rooms that you aren't supposed to. If your disregard of your responsibilities is one of the main reasons why your folks aren't allowing you to have a dog, then taking care of little things like these will help to convince them that you are capable of being trustworthy.

4. Identify the Dog Lover Within Your Parents

Identifying the dog lover within one of your parents is vital in getting both of them onboard with your wish of owning a dog. If your dad is a dog lover, recruit his help in convincing your mom and vice versa.

Be genuine and clear up front when you request one of your parent's help in convincing the other. Manipulative or sly behavior will instantly be detected, and your request may never be granted.

5. Earn Good Grades to Convince Your Parents to Get You a Dog

Although they may not tell you directly, your poor grades in school could be one of the reasons why your parents are refusing to get you a dog. Overcome this hurdle by getting good grades.

Inform your parents that your short-term goal is to earn higher grades so that they will allow you to get a dog. Make sure you study hard and ace all of your tests, papers and projects. Your commitment towards earning better grades may finally help convince your parents that you are ready for the responsibility of owning a dog.

6. Recruit Help From Someone Who Owns a Dog

Your parents could be overthinking the costs and the troubles associated with owning a dog. You can put your parents at ease by asking a friend's parent, a neighbor or a relative that owns a dog to talk to them.
