Japan is home to the world's largest market in ivory. Ivory is mainly used to carve out traditional seals used to stamp documents as a form of a signature. Officials in Japan have recently tightened restrictions on the country's ivory trade in the face of global criticism. For instance, carbon dating is now used to prevent illegal elephant tusks from entering the market. But activists say there are still loopholes that are contributing to the illegal hunting and smuggling of elephants. Only whole tusks are regulated. But if those tusks are cut, they can be exempted from exams. Activists are calling on the Japanese government to further tighten regulations.
